How to Detangle Matted Afro & 4C Hair.

Matted 4C and afro hair can be saved without cutting, even when a section has locked into one pad. What happens to it tonight decides how long the work takes.
Coily texture is the hair I handle most, and I restore matted afro, 4C and curly hair at my London studio every week. Across more than 1,000 clients since 2020, 99% were saved without cutting.
If your coils have locked into a pad, leave that section exactly as it is tonight. Don't wash it, and put nothing on it: no leave-in, no conditioner, no oil, no spray bottle.

The short answer
Matted afro and 4C hair is opened dry, from the ends upward, one section at a time, with fingers before any tool.
Why Afro and 4C Hair Mats So Easily
Each strand of afro and 4C hair bends back on itself many times, the tightest coil pattern of any texture, and those bends hold on to shed hair. The 50 to 100 strands a person sheds each day stay caught in the coils and wrap around the hair still growing from the scalp.
In my own client record since 2020, 68% of the severe cases were curly-textured, and my study of what causes severe matting sets out the reasons across all clients. On coily hair, shed strands build up between wash days, and coils that have dried out mat sooner. A protective style worn too long without a proper takedown keeps the strands shed in that time pressed against the root.
First, Check What You're Dealing With
Pinch a dry section near the ends and ease the coils sideways with your fingers, without pulling. Coils that come apart, even slowly, are tangled. A section that slides as one block is matted. Frizz and shrinkage can make a 4C section look solid when the coils inside still separate, so test it rather than judge by eye.
On my five-grade scale, a coil pattern that still separates with fingers is Grade 1; a section that moves as one pad is Grade 4 or 5. Coils that separate can go back to wash-day detangling, damp and with conditioner. If your fingers get stuck partway, send me a photo before you go further. A pad that moves as one piece stays dry until a specialist has seen it.
Why Nothing Goes On a Matted Section
No. Conditioner, oil and detangler sprays do not open a felted 4C section, and at home nothing goes on a mat at all. In my chair, slip product goes on only once a section has started to open. The products below are the ones I find inside matted coils every week.
Coconut oil sets hard inside the coils
Coconut oil is solid below about 24°C. It goes on warm and feels like slip, then the room cools it inside tight coils and it sets hard around the knot.
Olive oil turns from slip to glue
When olive oil has been left in matted coils, the strands come to me stuck together. It oxidises and thickens, and it has to come out before the knot can be worked.
Conditioner and masks swell the mat
The water in conditioner and masks swells a felted coil section and knits it tighter instead of separating it.
Cowboy Magic and other detangler sprays
People ask me about Cowboy Magic Detangler a lot. Like any detangler spray, it only helps where strands can still slide past one another. In a felted section it stays on the surface, adds weight and turns a dry mat into a wet one.

Overnight soaks and kitchen remedies
Nothing goes on a mat to soak, not for hours and not for a whole night, unless a specialist has seen your case and told you otherwise.
After the coils are open, a mask, a bond treatment or a light oil can go on, and I'll tell you which one your hair needs. From then on most clients do well washing 2 to 3 times a week with what I've recommended.
When to See a Professional
See a specialist as soon as a section stops separating with your fingers. Reach out too if the mat sits close to the scalp, covers a large area or has been there for weeks, or if what you took for a tangle hurts to work through.

Step-by-Step: Protecting Matted 4C Hair

Stop the water
No shower, no wash and no spray bottle on the matted section. Water swells the cuticle and pulls every knot tighter, so a section that could still be worked dry turns denser and heavier once it's wet.

Plait what's still loose
Coily hair holds a small plait well, so plait every part that isn't matted yet into several small three-strand plaits rather than one thick braid. Keep them comfortable, not tight. The plaits stop loose hair being drawn into the mat while you wait.

If the hair gets wet anyway
If rain or sweat gets to it, dry it with warm air rather than cool, because getting it dry quickly is all that matters now. Don't rub it with a towel, and keep brushes and combs away from it.

Keep the scissors away
Shrinkage hides how long coily hair really is, so a cut that looks small can take years of growth with it. Keep scissors out of reach and let a specialist look first.

Common Mistakes to Avoid
In my case files, 89% of recorded home attempts on severe mats made the mat denser.
- Brushing the mat. Bristles can't open a felted section; they tear the healthy coils around it and feed the broken hair into the knot.
- Picking at it through the day. Every touch frays the edge of the mat and pulls loose coils in, so leave the area alone until it has been seen.
- Waiting weeks to ask. A mat only gets tighter and closer to the scalp with time. Grade 3 takes 6 to 9 hours to open; Grade 5 takes 14 hours or more.
