Matted Hair Specialist
in London.

My name is Vitalii Prisacari, and I run Matted Hair London in Catford, the UK's only studio dedicated entirely to restoring matted, tangled and knotted hair without cutting. Not as one service among many. As the only thing I do, across more than 1,000 documented restorations since 2020.

How Matted Began

Matted Hair London did not start as a business plan. It started with me helping my wife after work, a few lines of text on a website, and one client I could not say no to. This is the honest version of how it happened.

It Began with Helping My Wife (2019)

In 2019 my wife Ariadna opened her hair extension studio in London, AV Extension, after working with extensions since 2016. Her diary filled quickly, on the strength of her quality and her care, and extension work runs on tight bookings: fittings, corrections, removals, often more clients in a week than there are days in it. When she needed help to keep up, I stepped in. My job was preparing each client before new extensions went in: removing the old keratin bonds, detangling the light matting that builds up over nearly three months of wear, then washing and drying. Routine work. A full detangle and comb-through took me 30 to 40 minutes.

Within a few months, the same job was taking 90 minutes, sometimes 120. Clients were arriving with hair far more tangled than a well-fitted extension should ever leave behind: work done elsewhere, other techniques, other products. So we put a notice on the AV Extension website: light detangling under 30 minutes stayed free, but severely or moderately matted hair that needed a full comb-through would be charged for the time it took.

That notice contained words we wrote without thinking twice: tangled hair, matted hair, detangling, detangler. Google indexed them. Within months, messages began arriving from people who did not want extensions at all. They wanted one thing: someone to detangle severely matted hair without cutting it. By the end of 2019, a new person was writing to us almost every day. Without meaning to, we had stumbled onto a service thousands of people were searching for and almost nobody in Britain offered.

The Ten-Hour Case That Decided Everything

At the end of 2019 a woman wrote to us in genuine despair. She had just left hospital after spinal surgery and could not travel. Her hair was the most severely matted I had ever seen, and every option in front of her ended with scissors. She had grown that hair her whole life. I knew far less then than I know now, but a single thought settled it: if I do not help her, who will?

That became my first home visit. In person, the hair looked worse than in the photos she had sent. Because of her spine she could not sit for long, so we found a position that was comfortable for her and hard for me: she lay on the bed with her head supported at its edge, and I worked kneeling on the floor, leaning towards her so she would feel no pulling and no pain. Of the ten hours the detangling took, roughly two I spent standing and eight on my knees.

Seven hours in, 99% of my brain was telling me to apologise and stop, to say it could not be done. The other 1% kept repeating two thoughts: if not me, then who? And if I give up now, I will give up every time it gets hard.

After ten hours, the hair was completely detangled. Nothing was cut. She was happy beyond words, and I had learned the three things that define this studio to this day: almost any case can be saved with enough patience, the mental battle is half the work, and this needed to become the only thing I do.

Building a Dedicated Studio (2020 Onwards)

2020 began with a plan: a professional website holding everything a person with severely matted hair needs to know, and a commitment to become a real expert rather than a well-meaning amateur. There was almost nowhere to learn. In 2020 not a single salon in the UK offered dedicated detangling, and trustworthy information was rare. I built the knowledge case by case and course by course: 23 verified qualifications so far, plus everything Ariadna, an expert in hair extensions, taught me about hair along the way.

Somewhere in those years I also developed my own detangling spray and post-restoration treatment, made with ingredients I am licensed to import and refined through years of testing. It is not sold anywhere. It is used in one place only: my sessions, at the studio in Catford and on home and hospital visits across London.

Today people come to this studio from all over the UK and from more than 15 countries, usually after every salon has given the same answer: cut it, nothing else can be done. After more than 1,000 documented restorations, my answer is still the one from that first night in 2019. The story began in my wife's chair; Matted Hair London, and my work as a dedicated matted hair specialist, began in 2020. Priority number one has never changed: to save your hair, not cut it. That is where the name comes from. Matted. We Save Hair, Not Cut It.

What 1,000+ Cases Look Like

Vitalii Prisacari is a VTCT Level 3 certified matted hair specialist and the founder of Matted Hair London, a private studio on Adenmore Rd, Catford, London SE6 4BT, open Monday to Saturday, 10am to 10pm. The studio has operated since 2020 and is the UK's only practice dedicated entirely to restoring matted, tangled and knotted hair without cutting. Across more than 1,000 documented restorations, every case has photographic records and none has required cutting; when scissors appear at all, it is at the client's own request. The case log spans every hair type from 1A to 4C, tangling from two weeks to over two years old, and causes most stylists never meet: depression, hospitalisation, chemotherapy, postpartum exhaustion, autism, chronic illness and elderly care. Vitalii holds 23 verified qualifications, including Mental Health First Aid through MHFA England, and offers mobile hair restoration through home and hospital visits across every London borough.

That is the formal version. The practical one: my documented save rate across more than 1,000 cases is 100%. When a client arrives convinced that cutting is the only option, I show the case photographs from similar situations and explain exactly what is possible before anyone agrees to anything.

Every case is graded on a five-step severity scale before work begins, so you know exactly where your hair stands. See how the five grades are defined in the FAQ.

What Actually Happens During a Session

01

Assessment

I examine tangling density, location, and scalp proximity. We talk through the history to understand, not to judge. Can't visit? Photos or a video call work. The 10-minute phone consultation is free, no payment needed.

02

Saturation

The hair goes into 4 to 8 sections. Each section gets soaked in professional conditioner and high-slip spray, applied warm, and re-saturated as I work. One session uses more conditioner than most people use in months. That is not waste. That is the cost.

03

Separation

About 90% of the work is done by hand. I start at the loosest edge, always tips to roots; forcing a comb root-to-tip through matted hair is how healthy strands get torn, and my fingers feel what no tool can. By the time I pick up a comb, they have already done most of it.

04

Finish and Care Plan

Each freed section gets a loose braid while I work the next. Once everything is clear, I wash with gentle products and apply a deep conditioning treatment. You leave with a written care plan for your specific hair type, daily life, and the triggers that caused the problem.

Sessions run 2 to 12 hours. One client at a time. No queue, no time pressure. More about what to expect: full session walkthrough in the FAQ.

Mental Health First Aid and Why It Changed Things

I hold Mental Health First Aid certification through MHFA England. I got it because of what I was already seeing in the chair, not because I planned for it. 42% of the cases I document are directly linked to depression, illness, or hospitalisation. That's not a small number. Nearly half of everyone who sits here is going through something well beyond a bad hair day, which is why the studio runs as a judgement-free space: nothing about how your hair got this way will surprise me, and none of it will be judged.

The training changed how I work. Not the technical part. The human part. I started noticing when someone dissociates during a session. I worked out that saying "take all the time you need" isn't the same as saying "we can stop whenever you want." Some clients need silence. Others need me to narrate every step so they know what's coming.

The NHS Adult Psychiatric Morbidity Survey, published in 2025, found that 22.6% of adults aged 16 to 64 in England live with a common mental health condition. Many of my clients arrive carrying months of shame alongside the tangling. Honestly, the shame is heavier than the hair.

Let me carry the hair. You carry yourself through the door.

This is mobile hair restoration in the full sense: for clients who can't travel due to illness, disability, mental health, childcare, or personal preference, I bring all products, tools, and equipment, and the work is identical to studio sessions.

Coverage across all London boroughs, in homes, hospital wards and care facilities. I have completed visits from Croydon to Camden, Woolwich to Wandsworth. £200 flat surcharge.

Keeping It Restored

Every client gets a written prevention plan specific to their cause. The plans are tiered by energy level because not every day is the same, and a routine that works on your best day needs a fallback for your worst.

30 sec
Loose braid and satin pillowcase.
2 min
Finger-check the nape area, light leave-in on the ends.
5 min
Section-by-section comb-through with product.

I stay available after sessions. If a small tangle forms weeks later, contact me before it escalates. For clients whose tangling was caused by depression or illness, the low-energy plan is the one that matters most.

15+
Countries clients have travelled from for this work, usually after being told cutting was the only option.
78%
Fewer overnight tangles reported in my client follow-ups after switching to a loose braid before bed.
30 days
Of follow-up support after every session, so a small tangle never becomes a big one.
2x
How much faster warm product works through dense tangling, based on my session records.
