Read this first
If your hair is matted right now, do not put anything on it
Keep the hair dry and put nothing on it until a professional has looked at it. In my own case files, going back to 2020, 89% of recorded home attempts on severe mats made the mat denser.
- No water and no water-based products while the hair is matted.
- No conditioner, treatments or detangling sprays, and don't leave anything on overnight.
- No coconut oil. It sets solid, turns sticky, and becomes very hard to remove.
- No olive oil. It is slippery for a while, then hardens and glues strand to strand.
- Fingers only, on dry hair, and only if the strands still separate on their own.
- Hair that is not yet matted can be braided loosely into several small three-strand plaits, so it does not worsen.

How much does matted hair detangling cost in London?
Sessions are £100 per hour
The grade of matting decides how many hours. Home visits add a flat £200 surcharge. To hold your date I take a £100 deposit, and it is taken off what you pay at the end.

How does matted hair detangling without cutting work?
The mat stays dry and nothing goes on it first. I do the work by hand, from the tips towards the roots, one small section at a time.
Professional products
I choose professional products for your hair type, and they go on only once a section has started to open.
Finger-first restoration
All of the work is done by hand, always tips-to-roots. When a strand resists, I skip it and work its neighbour.
Finishing and aftercare
I braid each section once it's free, then condition it. Before you go, I tell you how to wash and brush it at home, and you get follow-up support after the session.

Clients usually come to me after another salon has said the scissors were the only option. My studio does one job: opening matted, tangled and knotted hair by hand, without cutting, at the pace your scalp allows.
Careful hygiene
Every tool is disinfected in Barbicide, a professional disinfectant, between clients. Fresh towels and single-use items for every session. If you are immunocompromised or recovering from chemotherapy or surgery, tell me beforehand.

Frequently asked questions
Does a detangler spray work on matted hair?
A detangler spray does not open a mat. On a matted section it coats the outside, and the water in it tightens what is underneath. Keep the hair dry until a professional has looked at it. In my studio, slip product goes on only once a section has started to open. My product guide lists which products help on severely matted hair.
Is frizzy or tangled hair the same as matted hair?
No. Frizzy or tangled hair still lets your fingers through, and a matted section does not. Test it on dry hair. If your fingers pass through, it is a tangle you can work at home. If they get stuck, or the section feels solid, it is a mat and a professional job, so send me a photo.
What is dematting hair?
Dematting is opening matted hair by hand, without cutting it. In my studio it means dry hair, small sections and fingers first, working from the tips towards the roots. It is slow work, because each mat is taken apart strand by strand instead of being cut out.
Is the first consultation free?
Yes. The first consultation is free, takes 10 minutes and happens by phone, WhatsApp or video call. You show me the hair, on camera or in a photo, and I tell you whether it can be saved, which grade it is, how many hours it needs and what it will cost. There is no payment and no commitment.
How long does a matted hair detangling session take?
A matted hair detangling session lasts as long as the grade of matting needs. Grade 1 tangles take 1 to 2 hours; Grade 5 full fusion takes 14 hours or more. At Grade 5, I sometimes split the work into two sessions a few days apart.
Which payment methods do you accept?
I accept card, Apple Pay, Google Pay, PayPal, Revolut, bank transfer and cash. If the total is a lot to pay at once, Klarna and Clearpay both let you pay in 3 at 0% interest.
