What really causes matted hair?

I hear this guilt-filled confession at least twice a week: "I should have brushed more often." Regular brushing helps, but severe matting is almost never about laziness. We analysed 1,000+ UK cases and published the full breakdown in our causes study. The ten causes, in order:

  1. Depression, illness and hospital stays (42%), by far the biggest driver
  2. Wrong washing technique (13%), circular scrubbing and rough handling
  3. Skipped brushing routines (10%), shed strands locking into living hair
  4. Low-quality or harmful products (9%), silicones, sulphates, counterfeits
  5. Social media myths (8%), wrong advice for the wrong hair type
  6. DIY chemical treatments (7%), box dye, bleach, relaxers
  7. London hard water (6%), mineral deposits roughening the cuticle
  8. Sleep friction (4%), loose hair on cotton, night after night
  9. Harmful accessories (0.5%), metal clasps and tight styles
  10. Internal health factors (0.5%), thyroid, iron, medication

Your hair texture sets the stage

If you have curly, coily or wavy hair, you are working against geometry: every curl is a crossing point where strands can interlock. In my Catford practice, 68% of severe cases involve curly-textured clients. It is a characteristic, not a flaw, and it simply asks for a routine built around it.

London's hard water makes everything worse

Thames Water reports some of Britain's highest calcium carbonate levels in SE postcodes. Those minerals coat the hair shaft wash after wash, roughen the cuticle and raise friction between strands. A shower filter removes most of the minerals, and a monthly chelating wash removes what gets through. Full postcode data is in our hard water FAQ.

The mental health connection

Depression, illness and hospital stays account for 42% of severe cases in our records. When energy disappears, hair care is often the first routine to slip, and the hair quietly records the season. There is zero judgement at this studio; I am Mental Health First Aid certified precisely because so many clients arrive mid-recovery. If this describes you, call or WhatsApp +44 79 02 02 02 01. Home visits are available. Samaritans (116 123) and Mind (0300 123 3393) offer free, confidential support.

When should you call a professional?

Red flags: call immediately

  • The matting has formed a solid mass that will not budge
  • Every attempt causes pain: knots have tightened around the roots
  • Post-medical matting after hospital bedrest or surgery recovery
  • You have applied products that made things worse

When DIY is still safe

You can handle mild matting at home if the matted sections are smaller than a 50p coin, your fingers can partially separate them, and any discomfort is mild. Even then, ring first: a free 10-minute call to +44 79 02 02 02 01 confirms whether your case is safe for home treatment. Most of the worst breakage I see happened at home, before anyone called.

Can matted hair be saved without cutting?

Yes. Across more than 1,000 documented cases at Matted Hair London, cutting has never been necessary. When cutting happens at all, it is because a client asks for it, to finish faster or for personal reasons; that is always their choice, never our recommendation. What professional restoration involves

Phase 1: Assessment (10 minutes)

I photograph the matting, test strand elasticity, and give an honest time estimate and a firm price before any work begins. If I cannot help, I tell you before you spend a penny.

Phase 2: Professional product saturation (20 minutes)

This is where DIY methods fail. I use professional-grade formulations unavailable in shops: pH-balanced slip conditioners, protein treatments and ceramide complexes, applied generously under a warm towel. Fractionated coconut oil, a pharmaceutical-grade preparation that behaves nothing like the jar in your kitchen, is used only here, in trained hands, where it is safe; it is never something to try at home on matted hair.

Phase 3: Strand-by-strand separation (2 to 10 hours)

  1. Start at the tips and work upward, never roots to tips
  2. Fingers first; tools only for the final stretch
  3. Re-saturate the section regularly as the product works
  4. Work in small sections, one at a time
  5. Breaks whenever you need them

Phase 4: Finishing (30 minutes)

Deep conditioning mask, protein treatment if needed, protective style, and a personalised aftercare plan to take home.

The truth about pain

Clients arrive terrified and leave saying they barely felt anything. The difference is technique, not pain tolerance: every section is held above the knot so the scalp feels no pulling, the work runs tips to roots, and fingers do the sensing that no tool can. Children regularly fall asleep in the chair. If anything hurts, we stop and adjust.

⚠ Product safety: what NOT to use on matted hair

Read this before applying anything. In our case files, 89% of recorded DIY attempts failed, and many added weeks of extra professional repair time.

  • Olive oil: contraindicated. Heavy, greasy buildup that compresses knots and attracts dirt. Our case records repeatedly document olive oil as a factor in worsened matting.
  • Standard coconut oil (virgin or extra virgin): not recommended. Too dense, and it solidifies below about 24°C, literally cementing matted knots together in a British home. The fractionated, pharmaceutical-grade preparation we use in the studio is a different product used under professional control; the supermarket jar is not it.
  • Heavy consumer conditioners: thick silicones coat matted strands and make the mass heavier and stickier over time.
  • Anything left overnight: in my experience, overnight product application makes matting worse far more often than it helps. Never sleep with product sitting in tangled hair.
  • Alcohol-based sprays, heavy waxes, castor oil and DIY food masks (egg, honey): all of them add weight, stickiness or residue that matting feeds on.

The only safe home application: the braid-first method

If a specialist has confirmed your case is mild enough for home care: braid the section loosely into a plait, apply a small amount of lightweight conditioner to the braid, work it through with your fingers while the product is active, rinse completely, and move to the next section. Never leave product sitting, never apply overnight. The full method with safety checks is in our FAQ.

Tools we recommend (we recommend, we never sell)

ToolUse
Tangle Teezer Wet DetanglerMild tangles on wet, conditioned hair; not for severe matting
Wet Brush OriginalFinal combing after restoration
Butterfly sectioning clipsSectioning, essential for any matted hair work
Aquis microfibre towelPost-wash drying without friction
Dyson AirstraitQuick, healthy drying; never sleep on damp hair
Paul Mitchell The DetanglerConditioning slip; ask us before using it on already matted hair

Why extensions get matted

Around 30% of my London clients arrive with extension-related matting. Shed hair stays trapped at the bonds, wraps around them, and compresses. Hard water speeds the whole process up. Call +44 79 02 02 02 01 immediately if knots are forming around tapes or beads, natural hair is shedding heavily at the attachments, or extensions feel gummy when wet. Caught within two or three weeks, extension matting is very saveable, and often the extensions are too; ignored for months, it usually means full removal.

The correct washing method

  1. Before washing: separate the hair into at least four sections and braid each loosely
  2. Product order: conditioner first, then shampoo, then conditioner again; the first conditioner adds slip and protection
  3. Detangle with conditioner in, gently, from the ends upward, section by section
  4. Wash in downward strokes, roots to ends; never scrub the mid-lengths in circles
  5. Dry completely before sleeping: squeeze with a microfibre towel, never rub with cotton
  6. Night routine: two loose plaits, silk or satin pillowcase, undo and brush gently in the morning

Preventing matted hair for good

Morning (5 minutes): finger-comb before getting up, brush from the tips upward for two minutes, style low-tension: a loose braid or a low bun with a silk scrunchie.

Evening (5 minutes): brush out the day's snags, braid loosely into two plaits, sleep on silk or satin, and make sure the hair is completely dry. No oils, conditioners or leave-ins overnight.

Monthly: a deep conditioning mask one week, a clarifying or chelating wash another, and a 2 mm dusting of split ends when needed. A preventative session at the studio every three months (£99) keeps trouble from ever starting; details in the 30-day aftercare plan.

Frequently asked questions

How long will my appointment take?

Mild matting: 1 to 3 hours. Moderate: 3 to 6. Severe: 6 to 12, occasionally split across two sessions. The free phone assessment gives you a realistic estimate before you book: +44 79 02 02 02 01.

Can you come to my home?

Yes. Home visits cover all London boroughs for a flat £200 surcharge on top of the hourly rate, with the full professional setup brought to you. Around a quarter of our clients choose this.

Will you have to cut my hair?

Not unless you ask us to. Across 1,000+ documented cases, cutting has never been necessary. We Save Hair, Not Cut It.

Can I use products at home on my matted hair?

Not without speaking to a specialist first. Olive oil is contraindicated, standard coconut oil cements knots, and most consumer products add residue that matting feeds on. Call +44 79 02 02 02 01 before applying anything; the product safety section above explains why.

Do you accept Klarna?

Yes: Klarna pay-in-3 and Clearpay at 0% interest, card, Apple Pay, Google Pay, PayPal, Revolut, bank transfer and cash. The £100 booking deposit comes off your final total.

Where can I find more answers?

The 300-question FAQ and the 50+ result gallery cover nearly everything, and anything they miss is a WhatsApp message away.
