What Are the Best Products for Severely Matted Hair?

A professional slip product, and it goes on last. It lowers friction between fibres that can already move, so it waits until my fingers have loosened the outer strands. The separating is mechanical, one small section at a time, from the ends towards the scalp.

Conditioners work through positively charged ingredients that settle preferentially on the damaged, negatively charged parts of the cuticle, which smooths the surface, reduces friction between fibres and makes combing easier. That is described in a widely cited review, Hair cosmetics: an overview in the International Journal of Trichology (2015). Less friction is exactly what you want on a tangle. On a felted mat, where strands are wound and compressed around each other, it changes very little.

Does a Detangling Spray Work on Matted Hair?

On tangles, yes; on mats, no. A detangling spray coats strands with light conditioning agents so a comb slides through crossed hair. Most sprays are water based. On a dense mat they add moisture and weight, and the section swells and tightens.

For everyday tangles, including children's, a water-based spray without heavy silicones is a reasonable thing to own. Spray onto a small section, work it with your fingers from the ends, and stop when the section stops moving. If you need more than a few minutes and the section has not loosened, it is no longer a tangle.

Sprays marketed as "extreme" or "for severe knots" do the same job with more silicone. The extra silicone stays on the outside of the hair and does not reach the knot.

What Does a Professional Detangler Use?

All of the work is done by hand. I use my fingers, special tools, sprays and products, each only when the hair needs it. The slip product is a professional one, chosen for the hair type and the severity of the matting, and it goes on late and warm.

I keep the exact products to myself. I spent years testing them on real clients. The same product applied at the start of a session, on a closed mat, would make the work slower and the result worse.

What Is Dematting, and Is There a Dematting Product?

Dematting, also called unmatting, means separating a mat back into individual strands without cutting it out. There is no dematting product that does this for you. To unmat hair, I free the strands by hand, a few at a time.

Creams and sprays sold as "mat removers" are made for tangles, where strands are only crossed. On a true mat they coat the knot from the outside and go no further.

The mat itself is made of hair you shed every day. The American Academy of Dermatology puts normal shedding at 50 to 100 hairs a day. When those strands cannot fall out, they wrap around the hair still growing, and that winding is what makes a mat.

At its most extreme the whole mass fuses into one rigid object, which dermatology calls acute hair matting, or plica polonica. DermNet describes it and the clinical options. Whether hair can be dematted depends on the state of the hair shaft and of the scalp.

Which Products Make Matted Hair Worse?

Anything that adds water, grease or weight to a knot that cannot move makes it worse. In order of how often I see it: conditioner left in, coconut oil, olive oil, detangling sprays applied to the whole mat, and anything left on overnight. Each one makes the mat heavier and the strands inside it pack closer together. My study of the causes of severe matting, built from my own case files, puts a number on it: 89% of recorded home attempts on severe mats made the mat denser.

If you have already put something on a mat, stop. Do not rinse it in the shower, because water runs over everything at once. Let the hair dry fully, plait the loose hair around it, and send a photograph before anyone works on it.

Which Products Help After Detangling?

Freshly dematted hair is often dry and frizzy at the ends, so a moisture or bond-repair mask comes first. A light leave-in keeps strands slippery between washes, and a flexible-bristle brush clears shed hair daily before it can wind around anything.

I give each client a recommendation for their own hair type. The two masks I recommend most often after a severe case are K18 Leave-In Molecular Repair Hair Mask and Olaplex No.8 Bond Intense Moisture Mask. Are Products Different for Afro and 4C Hair?

The products stay the same; the method changes. Coily hair needs several times more slip product, worked into smaller sections with more patience, and it must never be combed dry from the root.

Can You Trust a Product That Promises to Remove Mats?

No. A product cannot remove a mat, whatever the label says, and one bought cheaply on an online marketplace may not even be the product on the label. Buy hair products from the brand or an authorised retailer.

Trading Standards South West reported a Which? investigation that found at least two thirds of the cosmetics it bought from online marketplaces may be counterfeit, and the Chartered Trading Standards Institute describes local action to remove dangerous cosmetics from sale. Poor products also cause matting on their own: in my case files, low-quality products were behind the matting for 9% of all my clients since 2020.

When Is No Product the Answer?

When fingers cannot get into the section, when it moves as one piece, or when an evening with conditioner and a comb has already failed, the hair is matted, not tangled. More product only makes the mat heavier, and pulling on it breaks hair.
