The short answer
Matted hair detangling, or dematting, means opening tangled, knotted and matted hair by hand without cutting it off. I charge £100 per hour in my private studio in Catford, SE6. At your home, a hospital ward or a care home anywhere in London, a flat £200 is added for the visit.
What Happens in a Detangling Session?
You know whether the hair can be saved without cutting, and roughly how many hours it needs, before you commit to anything.
I ask what caused the matting and look at the hair type, because both change the plan. There is no charge for the consultation and no obligation to book.
All of the work is done by hand. I use my fingers, special tools, sprays and products, each only when the hair needs it. I open the hair one section at a time. Before you try anything yourself, read how to detangle severely matted hair at home, and where to stop.

The Questions People Actually Ask Me First
Can my hair actually be saved, or are you just going to cut it?
Almost always. Across more than 1,000 clients since 2020, 99% were saved without cutting, and only one had part of her hair cut, with her agreement. In a typical case most of the hair stays on the head. What comes away is hair that had already shed and was trapped inside the mat.
If a photograph tells me the hair cannot be saved, I say so instead of taking the booking.
What is this going to cost me, in total?
The total is the hours your hair needs at £100 per hour. The consultation is free, the £100 deposit comes off the total, and there is no separate charge for products or aftercare advice. Before you commit, the consultation puts you in one of the five grades below.
What if it takes longer than you estimated?
I tell you as soon as I can see it, and you decide what happens next. If the hair turns out denser than the photograph showed, we choose together whether to carry on or split the work into two sessions. I only charge for hours you have agreed to.
Will you judge me for how bad it has got?

Who am I trusting with my hair?
My name is Vitalii Prisacari and this is the only thing I do. No colour, no cuts, no blow dries, only matted hair, since 2020. How Much Does Detangling Cost in London?
I charge £100 per hour, because one head needs 1 to 2 hours and another 14 hours or more. The table below gives the hours and the price for each grade, and the free 10-minute consultation tells you yours before we start.
Tangles you can still open with your fingers. £100 to £200.

What is included, and what is extra
The hourly rate covers the assessment, the products, the detangling itself and the aftercare advice. The £100 deposit holds your date and is taken off the final bill. Coming to you anywhere in London adds a flat £200 for travel and the kit I bring. A maintenance session afterwards, to keep the hair from returning to that state, is £100. Can You Detangle Hair Other Salons Turned Away?
Yes. Since 2020 I have worked on matting caused by depression, hospital stays, chemotherapy, surgery recovery, postpartum exhaustion, autism, chronic illness and elderly care.

How Do Professionals Refer a Client, a Patient or a Resident?
A referral starts with one photo on WhatsApp, sent by you or by the family. Social workers, district nurses, occupational therapists, ward staff, care home managers and support workers refer people to me.
- My training is on public record. Check the full list of my qualifications before you put my name in front of a family, a manager or a safeguarding lead.
- You can make the referral yourself. Along with the photo, tell me what I should plan for, such as dementia, limited mobility, sensory sensitivity or anxiety.
- I come to them. Visits to homes, hospitals and care facilities cover every London borough, and arrival is discreet and unmarked. Ward staff can first read about matted hair after surgery or a hospital stay.
- The assessment costs nothing. You get an answer on whether the hair is saveable before a shave is put on a care plan.
- The estimate comes first: the hours and the total, at £100 per hour plus the flat £200 for a visit, are agreed before I arrive.
- When an organisation is paying rather than the person, I can provide a written quote and an invoice. Ask for them when you make contact.
- I see children from age three, and for them a home visit usually works better than the studio.

Where Is the Studio, and Do You Do Home Visits?
The studio is on Adenmore Road, Catford, London SE6 4BT, about 5 minutes from Catford Bridge station, with a private parking bay. I also come to you anywhere in London.
Most clients come to me. A home visit suits children, limited mobility, anxiety and anyone caring for someone who cannot leave the house. Hospitals, hospices and care homes are covered on the same terms.

What is the difference between detangling and dematting?
They are the same work under two names. People say detangling for tangled and knotted hair, Grades 1 to 3 on my scale, and dematting when sections have fused into mats, Grades 4 and 5. I do both by hand, with the mat kept dry, and cutting is never the first option. The free 10-minute consultation tells you which grade your hair is.
How long does it take to detangle matted hair?
It depends on your grade, and the pricing table above gives the hours for each one. Grades 4 and 5 can be split across two sessions, a few days apart, so nobody sits 10 hours straight. The free 10-minute consultation tells you your grade before you book.
Do you put conditioner or detangler on matted hair first?
No. Matted hair stays dry and nothing goes on the mat first, because water tightens the knot and stretches the strands. I open each section with my fingers before any tool, working from the tips to the roots. A detangler or slip product goes on only once a section has started to open, and only when the hair needs it.
Is there a minimum age for detangling?
The youngest client I take is three years old, because younger children cannot sit through the work. For children I usually suggest a home visit: a familiar room and their own things make a long session far easier for a child.
Can I book on behalf of somebody else?
A large share of my bookings are made by a relative, a carer, a support worker or a care home rather than by the person themselves. Send a photo of the hair on WhatsApp and tell me what is going on, for example a recent hospital stay or trouble sitting still for long. I can come to the person's home, a hospital or a care home anywhere in London.
Can I pay for detangling in instalments?
Klarna and Clearpay both let you pay in 3 at 0% interest, which helps when a Grade 4 or 5 session runs to £1,000 or more. The other payment methods I accept, and the deposit terms, are on the payment page, so you can check them before you book.
