A Curly Hair Routine That Actually Works

A realistic curly hair routine from wash day to day five: hydration, detangling, refreshing and night care, built for curls that tangle and frizz easily.

In brief

A working curly hair routine has four parts: a hydrating wash day with detangling done while conditioner is in, a product order that seals moisture into the curl, gentle refreshing between washes, and night protection that stops eight hours of pillow friction undoing the other three. Everything else is optional.

Why curls need a different rulebook

A curly strand is an oval strand that bends, and every bend is a gate that slows the scalp’s natural oils on their way down the length. That is the whole story of curly hair in one sentence: the ends are chronically drier than the roots, and dry, bending strands catch on each other instead of sliding.

So the two permanent jobs of any curly routine are adding moisture and reducing friction. Products matter less than the order and gentleness with which you use them. A £6 conditioner applied patiently to sectioned, damp curls beats a £40 cream raked through dry ones every single time.

Wash day, step by step

  1. Pre-detangle before water touches the hair. Work through the lengths with your fingers, then a wide-tooth comb, on dry or lightly misted hair. Never start a wash with tangles in place; water tightens them.
  2. Shampoo the scalp, not the lengths. A sulphate-free shampoo massaged at the roots once or twice a week is enough; the suds that rinse through clean the lengths on their way down.
  3. Condition in sections and detangle while it is in. This is the moment the whole week depends on. With conditioner loading the hair with slip, work each section from the ends upward with fingers first, then the comb. Knots that would snap dry hair slide apart wet and coated.
  4. Rinse cool, not cold. Cool water settles the cuticle without the shock that makes rinsing rushed.
  5. Apply products to soaking-wet hair. A leave-in conditioner first, then a cream or gel, scrunched upward rather than raked through. Wet application is what turns product into definition.
  6. Dry without friction. A microfibre towel or cotton t-shirt, pressed not rubbed, then air-drying or a diffuser on medium. A regular towel rubbed over curls manufactures frizz and knots in thirty seconds.

Product order, simplified

Forget the acronyms until you need them. The logic is always the same: water in, then something to hold it there. Leave-in conditioner on wet hair carries the moisture; a cream or butter seals it for thicker, drier curls; a gel casts and defines for looser patterns. Fine curls may need only the leave-in and a light gel. Coily hair usually wants all three. Adjust by how the hair feels on day three, not by what a routine video says.

Between wash days: refresh, do not restyle

Daily rewetting and restyling exhausts curls. Refresh instead: mist with water or a half-water half-leave-in mix, scrunch the flattened sections, and leave the rest alone. Twice between washes is plenty. If the roots look oily before wash day arrives, that is a scalp schedule problem, not a product problem; move wash day earlier rather than adding dry shampoo on top of curls.

Detangling curls without losing the pattern

Detangle damp and coated in conditioner, in sections that follow the natural curl clumps, fingers before tools, always from the ends toward the roots. Working with the clump pattern removes knots while keeping the curl’s memory; dragging a brush across it breaks both.

This matters more than any product choice, because curls do not just tangle, they mat. The same bends that give curls their shape hold on to the 50 to 100 hairs everyone sheds daily, and shed hair that stays is how matting starts. In our records at Matted Hair London, more than 1,000 documented restorations since 2020, curly and coily textures are overrepresented in severe matting for exactly this mechanical reason, never because of poor hygiene. The full texture-specific method is in our afro and 4C detangling guide, and if a section already feels fused rather than tangled, stop and send a photo first: the 10-minute assessment is free, and forcing curls apart dry is the one mistake that cannot be undone.

Night protection: the quiet half of the routine

Eight hours of cotton pillowcase friction can undo a perfect wash day. Choose one: a silk or satin pillowcase, a loose pineapple (curls gathered high in a soft scrunchie), a satin bonnet, or loose plaits for long curls. Any of them cuts overnight tangling dramatically; in our case records, sleep friction alone accounts for 4% of severe matting cases, and the nape is always where it starts.

Signs your routine is failing, and what each one means

Frizz on day one means the hair needed more water at styling. Crunch that does not soften means too much gel or not enough leave-in underneath. Knots concentrated at the nape and underlayers mean detangling is skipping sections. And a patch that re-tangles within hours, or feels dense when you press it, means shed hair has started locking in; that is the moment to slow down, add slip, and check honestly whether you are still dealing with tangles or with early matting.

Frequently asked questions

How often should curly hair be washed?

Once or twice a week suits most curly hair; coily textures often prefer once. The limiting factor is the scalp: wash when it feels oily or itchy, and spend the saved washes on conditioning the lengths.

Should I brush curly hair every day?

No. Daily dry brushing breaks the curl pattern and creates frizz. Detangle properly on wash day with conditioner in, refresh gently between washes, and keep a daily eye on the nape with your fingers only.

Why does my curly hair tangle so fast?

The bends in each strand trap shed hair and rub against neighbouring strands, so curls tangle structurally, not because of anything you did wrong. Slip, sectioning, night protection and regular shed-hair removal keep it manageable.

What is the best routine for curly hair in hard water?

Hard water minerals stiffen curls and speed up tangling; in our records hard water contributes to 6% of severe cases. A monthly clarifying wash followed by a deep conditioner, or a shower filter, makes every other product work better.

When the routine is not the problem

Some weeks the routine fails because the hair has already moved past what routines fix. If a section of your curls has fused, or detangling has started to hurt, do not fight it at home. Send a photo instead; the assessment takes 10 minutes, costs nothing, and across 1,000+ documented cases we have never needed to cut. We Save Hair, Not Cut It.
