How to Actually Grow Longer Hair

Hair grows about 1 to 1.25 cm a month no matter what you buy. Growing longer hair is about keeping it: the retention system that actually adds length.

In brief

Hair grows roughly 1 to 1.25 cm a month at the follicle, and almost nothing you buy changes that speed. Hair gets longer when you keep what grows: cutting breakage below the growth rate is the entire game. Length is not a growth project; it is a retention project, and retention is friction, moisture, and gentle hands.

The maths nobody sells you

At 1 to 1.25 cm a month, every head grows 12 to 15 cm a year. So why does most hair hover at the same length for years? Because the ends break at the same rate the roots produce, and the two cancel out invisibly. A strand has to survive years untouched to reach your waist. That reframe changes everything: the question is never “how do I grow faster”, it is “where is my hair breaking, and how do I stop it”.

Where length actually dies

Rank your suspects the way we see them in the studio. Rough detangling snaps more length than everything else combined: forced brushes, dry raking of curls, root-first strokes. Friction wears the same spots daily: cotton pillowcases, coat collars, bag straps on the same shoulder. Heat and bleach make strands brittle so the first two kill them faster. Tight styles snap hair at the tension line and thin the hairline. And ignored split ends travel upward: a 2 mm split becomes a 5 cm break with time. None of these announces itself; you just notice, eventually, that the length stopped.

The retention system, in order of payoff

  1. Detangle gently every one to two days, ends first, fingers before tools, so shed hair leaves before it tangles and no attached hair snaps on a knot.
  2. Kill night friction: silk or satin pillowcase, or a loose plait; sleep is a third of your hair’s life.
  3. Keep the ends moisturised: the oldest few centimetres are the driest and snap first; a leave-in or light cream on the ends daily costs ten seconds.
  4. Loosen the styles: if a ponytail leaves a dent, it is eating your hairline and your length.
  5. Wash with slip: conditioner every wash, detangle while it is in, never towel-scrub.
  6. Trim strategically, not fearfully: dusting the split millimetres every 8 to 12 weeks removes less length than the splits would take on their own. This is ordinary hairdressing maintenance, and it is the one place scissors genuinely serve length.

What does not grow hair, honestly

Growth oils do not speed follicles; at best they reduce breakage as a sealant, at worst heavy oils glue shed hair into tangles, and in our case records that gluing is how some of the worst mats begin. Gummies and supplements only help if you have the deficiency they replace; test before you buy. Scalp brushing feels lovely and moves oil around, which is nice and not growth. Ten-day miracle claims are marketing arithmetic against a 1 cm monthly biology. Spend the money on a silk pillowcase and a good conditioner instead; the boring answer is the working one.

Protective and low-manipulation styling, used honestly

Styles that tuck the ends away, braids, twists, buns worn loose, genuinely retain length by cutting daily friction and handling. They earn their name only with the full discipline: installed without tension, moisturised through the wear, taken down on schedule with shed hair removed before washing. Overworn protective styles flip to the other side of the ledger; the shed hair that could not fall away locks in, and in our records at Matted Hair London, across 1,000+ documented restorations since 2020, overstayed styles are a steady source of the severe matting we restore. Protection is a schedule, not a set-and-forget.

Retention by hair type

Fine hair loses length to friction and elastics: silk pillowcase, soft scrunchies, and the lightest products, because heavy creams drag fine strands into each other. Curly hair loses it to dry handling: every centimetre kept starts with detangling damp, with conditioner, in sections. Coily and afro hair holds the growth-rate record for the gap between growth and visible length, because each bend is a potential breakage point; slip, sections, satin at night and low-manipulation stretches do the retaining. Bleached hair plays on hard mode: everything above applies, doubled, plus bond-repair treatments and ruthless heat discipline. Different weak points, same principle: find where YOUR length dies, and guard that gate first.

Track it or you will quit

Retention progress is invisible week to week, which is why people abandon working routines. Photograph the same view monthly, same shirt, same light: back of head, and a marked point like bra-strap or shoulder-blade level. Count broken fragments on your brush occasionally; full-length hairs with a root tip are normal shedding, short pieces are breakage telling you which habit to fix. Six months of photos will show centimetres the mirror never admits.

Frequently asked questions

How fast does hair really grow?

About 1 to 1.25 cm a month, 12 to 15 cm a year, set by genetics and largely immune to products. Visible length gain is growth minus breakage, which is why retention habits change results when growth boosters cannot.

Why does my hair stop growing at a certain length?

It does not stop; it breaks at the same rate it grows once the ends are old enough. The fix is at the ends, not the roots: gentler detangling, less friction, moisture on the oldest centimetres, and dusting splits before they travel.

Do trims make hair grow faster?

No, scissors cannot reach the follicle. Trims make hair LONGER over time by removing split ends before they tear centimetres upward. Dusting a few millimetres every 8 to 12 weeks protects length; skipping trims to “save length” usually costs it.

Does tying hair up help it grow?

Loose containment helps by cutting friction; tight styles do the opposite, snapping hair at the band and stressing the hairline. The test is comfort: if you feel the style pulling, so does every follicle in it.

Keep what you grow

Every centimetre you will ever have has already been scheduled by your follicles; whether it arrives is decided by your hands, your pillowcase and your patience. And if tangling is currently taking more length than breakage ever did, deal with that first: a free 10-minute photo assessment tells you honestly what your hair needs, and across 1,000+ documented cases, cutting has never been necessary. We Save Hair, Not Cut It.
